HEALTH & FITNESS

Every day, discoveries in the field of gerontology
and changes in societal attitudes about aging are transforming
both thinking and practice in the field of senior care services.
Increasingly our residents are intent on pursuing not just
an active lifestyle, but a healthy lifestyle. Responding
to their growing desire for physical exercise, mental stimulation,
and a health-conscious diet, RPP has placed a significant
emphasis on health promotion in every facet of its operation.
RPP's "world-at-our-doorstep" location promotes
healthy living for residents who like to take walks, who
enjoy going out to volunteer, who have a thirst for enrichment
courses or lectures on nearby college campuses, or who just
have a yen to gad about for a change of scene.
Residents can take advantage of numerous
fitness, wellness and activity programs at RPP that support
their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual
well-being.

In addition to her duties as nurse practitioner in RPP's Ambulatory Care Center, Barbara Resnick, PhD, CRNP, focuses lots of attention with residents on
wellness, prevention and health promotion. |
When you meet Dr. Barbara Resnick,
one of RPP's nurse practitioners, you will understand why
our community is so hyped on health promotion. "Dr. Barb,"
as she is fondly called by residents, first joined the staff
in 1984 when RPP opened. In her dual capacity as Assistant
Professor at the University of Maryland, Barbara has been
doing pioneering work in restorative care that is gaining
national recognition.
"The purpose of health promotion
and disease prevention is to reduce the potential years
of life lost in premature mortality and ensure better
quality of remaining life," Barbara explains. "As Americans
live longer it is suggested that health promotion activities
are all the more important because these individuals will
have more years to benefit from preventative strategies."
